In recognition of the fact that overabundant macropods were an issue in most Australian states and territories the Kangaroo Management Taskforce collaborated with a group of scientists in 2019 to design and deliver two national kangaroo symposiums. The symposiums explored the issues associated with current approaches to kangaroo management such as poor outcomes for biodiversity and animal welfare.
The first symposium was hosted by the Kangaroo Management Taskforce and took place at the biennial Australian Rangeland Society Conference in Canberra in September 2019. The second symposium took place in Launceston, Tasmania in November 2019 at the annual conference of the Ecological Society of Australia.
Participants at the two events helped inform the development of this national statement for improving kangaroo management and discuss potential solutions for improvement.
