Frequently Asked Questions

Kangaroo management is complex and can often be controversial. On this page we’ve included links and resources to address some of the most common questions/criticisms related to kangaroo management.

“Kangaroos are not overabundant, they’re becoming extinct”

Kangaroo population surveys are undertaken regularly in commercial kangaroo harvest zones across Australia. For state by state information on the frequency and methods of population estimates, please go to the Commercial Harvesting page.

Every year the Australian Government publishes information about kangaroo populations surveyed in the commercial kangaroo harvest zones. In 2018 there were an estimated 42,188,970 kangaroos in those zones across NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. Please note, these estimates ONLY include the harvestable macropod species that can be harvested in particular states/regions.
