A national approach

In recognition of the fact that overabundant macropods can be an issue in most Australian states and territories, in 2019 the Kangaroo Management Taskforce collaborated with a group of scientists to design and deliver two national kangaroo symposiums. The symposiums explored the issues associated with current approaches to kangaroo management such as poor outcomes for biodiversity and animal welfare.

The first symposium was hosted by the Kangaroo Management Taskforce and took place at the biennial Australian Rangeland Society Conference in Canberra in September 2019. The second symposium took place in Launceston, Tasmania in November 2019 at the annual conference of the Ecological Society of Australia.

Participants at the two events helped inform the development of this national statement for improving kangaroo management and discuss potential solutions for improvement. This statement was endorsed by a wide range of conservation and animal welfare groups in a special kangaroo edition of Ecological Management and Restoration.

NRM Regions Australia – Kangaroo Community of Practice

There are 54 NRM regions in Australia that work with
communities, land managers and farmers, governments and other partners to regenerate and sustain Australia’s biodiversity and productive landscapes.  Following a Kangaroo Management Workshop at an NRM Regions Australia conference in 2022, staff from different NRM regions came together to form a Kangaroo Management Community of Practice (COP). This group meets regularly to communicate and collaborate on regional issues and opportunities in the kangaroo management space.
