The KMT felt that the Government Response to the Inquiry recommendations was entirely appropriate, especially given the fact that we believed that the Inquiry scope and approach failed to address the real big picture issues. The Inquiry Committee focused on emotive, sensationalist views, gave greater emphasis to “expert witnesses” with no credible expertise on kangaroo ecology and completely ignored any evidence from groups representing Western NSW, where a great majority of the state’s kangaroos reside!
The KMT believes the Inquiry completely missed a valuable opportunity to address what really is a wicked problem in NSW with huge ecological consequences. We thought that being chaired by a Greens Senator at least some consideration would have been given to the welfare of the landscapes and the other fauna and flora that share them, ie the broader ecological context of kangaroo management, rather than narrowly focusing on simplistic claims that we just shouldn’t kill kangaroos. Perhaps they didn’t realise that it was the NRC themselves in 2016 who called for the NSW government to review kangaroo management to address adverse outcomes from overpopulation and exaggerated boom cyst cycles. What a wasted opportunity.

Roo Row: The highly divisive kangaroo industry
www.abc.net.au
Under threat or over-abundant? Animal activists want kangaroo harvesting to end, while supporters say welfare outcomes are much worse when populations are not properly managed.Funny those against controlling roo numbers are urban dwellers with only theoretical knowledge.
interesting that you are deleting comments from a scientist who has the most survey data and experience with roos, and roos over most of Australia. He worked with his father as a roo processor as a lad so no biases there. So it’s clear inconvenient truths seem to hurt your cause too. Nice work.
I grow increasing tired of all of this mumbo jumbo. Where is the science from all of you? And pushing more of us to eat roos fails to recognise a very large emergent set of generations who are vegetarians. So your agenda needs to be better thought out. We have many years of aerial survey data on kangaroos now from many states. We also conduct impact work regularly. We survey in many states. Some of our data goes 25 years back. And we have GPS positions on each sighting. . We are modelling it now for publication. I have kept quiet but am now concerned not one of the interviewees had the big picture in mind, including this task force. It seems to me the most outspoken on kangaroos knows the least. And as usual opinions count more than impact data and distribution/abundance data. We need to deal with several critical issues in this country. 1. When are roos actually overabundant and when are they simply congregated? The animal rights movement have a point on this, so stop discounting them like they are idiots. None of you have a clue. No, they are not filing the native vegetation adjacent pasture to the brim. From a young age I always heard farmer friends say “bloody parks, full of roos”. Well the data doesn’t support that. Quite the contrary. 2. While most are good operators, should unsustainable stock managers be getting destruction permits with no evidence? Why are they there? They introduce water to roos, overgraze and then want the roos shot, claiming animal welfare. Rubbish. It’s a lie. We fly Australia counting animals at 60-70 metres above the ground every year. No one can tell me these properties are sustainable. 3. Can we finally have a national debate and be clear what we want as a country. Either a. farm and pastoralism needs roo grazing to be displaced by stock grazing or b. a balance. Either needs the numbers, not the passions. Unlike rock wallabies, kangaroos have always been water dependant. Yes we have 25 yrs of data on this. So can the cries that many roos die in drought please be shut down? They always die back in drought no matter how many there are.

They just pluck a number and run with it. It’s pretty much defamation, destroying the reputation of an industry they have no idea about. Typical… minority with no practical experience on subject matter voicing their ignorance. If only they realised if their out come comes to Light, the exact opposite outcome will eventuate. The ignorance is just appalling.

Further to our post yesterday about the kangaroo contraception initiative in the ACT, the KMT is very interested in the question "how many kangaroos are too many"? Indeed, we think this is the essential question all Australians need to be asking. We also applaud Ian Walker for clearly articulating that kangaroo management in the ACT is focused on protecting the precious grassy ecosystems and woodlands. Australia's precious rangelands which cover 75% of our continent and are comprised of native grasses, diverse ecosystems and precious biodiversity are just as worthy of protection. #kangaroo ... How many kangaroos are too many in the ACT?
www.abc.net.au
The ACT government says vast mobs of kangaroos continue to threaten the Territory's biodiversity through overgrazing, hailing a new sterilisation program as the answer. Tahlia Roy reports.
The ACT has a robust system for measuring the carrying capacity of their reserves and detrmining just how many kangaroos they can support without being destroyed. We wish them well in this exercise aimed at using contraceptives to keep kangaroo numbers at sustainable levels. However, please note, these are SMALL ecosystems and SMALL numbers of kangaroos compared to the 25-50 million kangaroos estimated to exist at any one time in the vast harvest zones of NSW Queensland, SA, Western Australia and Victoria. Good luck ACT but this is not a viable solution for kangaroo overabundance issues at a broader scale - and please note that our precious natural rangelands are just as worthy of protection from overgrazing as the reserves in the ACT.
